Wherever it points.

My newest musical obsession is the talented Kacey Musgraves. Although a couple of her songs are humorously country (" My House" and "Blowin' Smoke"), she really does have a raw talent for telling it like it is. I was on a friend's Instagram one day and saw a cute picture she had taken of some song lyrics. Seeing as how both of us grew up in the same small town, I could totally relate to why she posted this picture with these lyrics. After seeing this, I wrote her and asked what the song was. She replied that it was Kacey Musgraves's "Follow Your Arrow."  After hearing it the first time I thought it was rather funny. She was pretty blunt about telling her listeners to pretty much do whatever they want... Although  it seemed a little raw the first time I heard it, it really hit home with me after listening to it again.

The point of this song is the simple fact that we need to live our owns lives. We can never make everyone happy and no matter how hard we try there are always going to be people that have a criticism about us.

This really hit home with me about a year ago. Like I said earlier, I grew up in a small town (a small town which I love very dearly), which means there is plenty of gossip to go around. I moved shortly after starting college and kind of forgot what the gossip and finger pointing was like. So... about a year ago... things were going really well in my life and I was in a really good place. I was out with some friends one night when a girl I went to highschool with showed up and decided she wanted to ruin my night. She came to our table to sit for a while and quickly began to cut childish eyes at me while telling everyone at the table complete nonsense about me. My immediate reaction was to be immature and pick her tiny little body up and throw it out the window into the pouring rain hoping she melted like the Wicked With of the West. BUT, I didn't do that. I played it cool and moved on. Did it hurt my feelings? YES. Did I shed a tear or two that night? Yes. But you know what? Later on it hit me..... No matter how good you are, how nice you are, how successful you are, how sweet you are, how smart you are or how perfect you are... there will ALWAYS be "those" people that want nothing more than to bring you down with their hatred, criticism and gossip. What should you do about it? Laugh it off.... and Follow Your Arrow.

Follow Your Arrow
Kacey Musgraves

If you save yourself for marriage
You're a bore
If you don't save yourself for marriage
You're a whore-able person
If you won't have a drink
Then you're a prude
But they'll call you a drunk
As soon as you down the first one

If you can't lose the weight
Then you're just fat
But if you lose too much
Then you're on crack
You're damned if you do
And you're damned if you don't
So you might as well just do
Whatever you want
So

Make lots of noise
And kiss lots of boys
Or kiss lots of girls
If that's something you're into
When the straight and narrow
Gets a little too straight
Roll up a joint, or don't
Just follow your arrow
Wherever it points, yeah
Follow your arrow
Wherever it points
Yeah

If you don't go to church
You'll go to hell
If you're the first one
On the front row
You're self-righteous
Son of a-
Can't win for losing
You just disappoint 'em
Just 'cause you can't beat 'em
Don't mean you should join 'em

So make lots of noise
And kiss lots of boys
Or kiss lots of girls
If that's something you're into
When the straight and narrow
Gets a little too straight
Roll up a joint, or don't
Just follow your arrow
Wherever it points, yeah
Follow your arrow
Wherever it points

Say what you feel
Love who you love
'Cause you just get
So many trips 'round the sun
Yeah, you only
Only live once

So make lots of noise
And kiss lots of boys
Or kiss lots of girls
If that's something you're into
When the straight and narrow
Gets a little too straight
Roll up a joint, or don't
Just follow your arrow
Wherever it points, yeah
Follow your arrow
Wherever it points
